One of the many goals of the Neurodiversity Initiative is make spaces more inclusive and accessible for the Neurodivergent community. Here are some of the resources we encourage to be used.

Communication Badges

These badges are one step in which we want to create an inclusive and welcoming space for all. These badges help to demonstrate the kind of communication the individual would rather demonstrate. The green thumbs up signals “Actively Seeking communication” The yellow caution sign signals “Limited communication/willing to communicate with individuals they know” and the red stop sign signals “Prefers to not be approached unless indicated otherwise”. We are now offering to provide communication badges into COE events and conferences, if you would like to make your conference more accommodating, please feel free to reach out to neurodiversityinitiative@northeastern.edu

An infographic showing the three different communication badges that are spoken about in the above text. The top badge is a "Thumbs Up" symbol in a green circle. It is labeled as "Green Thumbs Up" and has the caption, "Actively seeking communication." The middle badge is an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. It is labeled as, "Yellow Caution Sign," and has the caption, "Limited communication, willing to communicate with people they recognize. The bottom badge is a hand held up in a stopping motion inside of a red octagon. It is labeled as "Red Stop Sign," and has the caption, "Prefers not to be approached unless indicated otherwise."

Sensory Spaces

A sensory space can be a crucial piece to events where individuals can get away from sensory overload. These spaces cater to the senses and have sensory engaging tools that the participants can use for their enjoyment. The space is private, quiet, and a relaxing space to make the participants have a chance to reset.

Here are some places on campus that have these spaces:

  • Snell library (designated Quiet rooms)
  • Spaces at Northeastern, Powered by Robin
